** SBS Rally / Thank You – The residents of Woodhaven spoke in a loud voice at our recent SBS Rally. The NYPD estimated that 200 residents showed up on a hot, sticky day to speak out against the current plan by DOT. You can click here to see the rally in full. ** Forest Park Carousel School Book Bag Giveaway – On Saturday August 27th at the Forest Park Carousel there will be an event giving away free book bags loaded with school supplies to kids. There will also be music, magic and of course, our NYC Landmark Forest Park Carousel. Learn about one store’s amazing connection to General Custer; find out where one of Woodhaven’s WW1 Fallen Soldiers lived; find out where one of the world’s largest businesses used to sit! The Woodhaven Historical Society have traced the businesses along this stretch all the way back to 1912 so you’ll know which store used to be where, and there are a number of surprises in store for you! Attendees will receive a special handout with a listing of all of the stores. ** SBS Kiosks Still Buggy Eight Years After Introduction – Anyone who says we can trust DOT and MTA regarding the Woodhaven & Cross Bay Boulevard Select Bus Service plan is being dishonest — and expecting us to ignore the agencies’ horrible track record. Click here for the latest evidence that this plan is a disaster in the making.
** Arrest Made in Imam Murder – The WRBA was shocked and saddened to hear about the execution-style shootings of an Ozone Park imam and his associate on Liberty Avenue last Saturday afternoon. A Brooklyn man was arrested for the murders. Kudos to the NYPD for swift action on this case. We hope justice is served.
** Richmond Hill Teacher Killed, Mom Injured in Home Attack – Another scary and sad story that is much too close for comfort. Click here for the dreadful details.
** UPDATE –Park Safety in Woodhaven – In light of the horrific murder ofKarina Vetrano in Howard Beach, we ‘shined a light’ on
safety conditions in Victory Field. We are happy to report the lights at the track in Victory Field have been repaired. Thanks to the Parks Department and DOT for a quick response.
** UPDATE – Man Arrested for Luring Child Into Car – A frightening incident occurred recently inRichmond Hill – a man lured a young girl (a student at PS 60) into his car.Thanks to some nearby security cameras, his car was identified and the creep arrested. He lived in Ozone Park, click here for details.** Forest Park Killer Sentenced To 15 Years – A homelessman has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the bludgeoning death of a man in Forest Park last summer. ** Woodhaven Residents’ 2016 Survey – The WRBA has launched a survey to find out what is on the mind of residents and how we can make Woodhaven a better place to live. All information on this survey is confidential but, for those who respond and provide contact information, we will add their name to a drawing for three $50 cash prizes. There will be, as usual, vendors, food, music, rides — an event we all look forward to ever year.
