Woodhaven Library to Close March 11th for Renovations

February 23, 2013

The Queens Library announced this week that the Woodhaven branch will be closed as of Monday, March 11, 2013 for long hoped-for renovations.  Click here for a flyer announcing the news.  There will be extensive renovations including:

  • Upgrades to lighting, furniture and finishes
  • New circulation desk
  • Fast self check-out with RFID technology
  • Fully automated 24/7 self check-in
  • New ADA compliant first floor bathroom
  • Major repairs / renovations done to the roof

These renovations will keep the library completely closed for about 3 weeks.  But the great news is that they will be setting up temporary quarters in the basement by the end of March (exact date to be announced).   Many times, while a library is being renovated, you need to make due with a mobile library — we are very fortunate to be able to keep a portiuon of the library open.  It will be accessible from the side entrance on 85th Drive.

The Queens Library thanks New York City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley, The Queens Delegation to the NY City Council and the State of New York for funding improvements to Queens Library at Woodhaven.

These renovations are long overdue — and all of Woodhaven owes the Friends of the Woodhaven Library a debt of gratitude for all their persistence and hard work — Judy Close, Jerry Murphy and most of all, Friends’ of the Woodhaven Library’s President Maria Concolino.   Also, Jen Manley — Director, Government & Community Affairs at Queens Library — should be thanked for all her hard work.   We love it when a plan comes together!

Now, we were told (not sure how true it is) is that one of the reasons Woodhaven had to wait so long is because of the extensive repairs it underwent after it was badly damaged in a fire 35 years ago.

Save Our Library – Again!

June 2, 2011

Here we go again — 3 people at our Woodhaven library are slated to get pink slips.  As of right now the Woodhaven Library has six staff members with one on maturity leave.  If these cuts go through the library will be left with one customer specialist, one librarian, and one clerk – that’s all.

There will be no children’s librarian will be at the Woodhaven Library.

And so, just like last year, the residents of Woodhaven need to show their support for their Library — there will be a rally on:

Please, if you can, come and stop by — last year we had a great turnout —

The rally will be followed by a Summer Reading sign-up and Ice Cream Party!!
