A Night At The Theater in Woodhaven

December 21, 2009

The comedic stage play “Arsenic and Old Lace” will be performed by The First String Players on the weekend of January 8th at St. Luke’s Church in Woodhaven.

The classic macabre comedy,  written by Joseph Kesselring, made its’ debut on Broadway in 1941 with Boris Karloff in a supporting role.  A film version was made that same year, but not released until 3 years later, after the show had closed.  The film version starred Cary Grant and was directed by Frank Capra.

This local production is directed by Paul Morisi and produced by Theresa McLoughlin.  It will be performed at St. Luke’s (87-34 85th Street) on:

Friday – January 8 @ 7pm

Do You Have The Write Stuff?

December 18, 2009

The Write Stuff . . . Ugh!  Luckily, the 102nd Precinct doesn’t give out tickets for old clichés.

The Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association is looking for a few writers for an event we’re planning during the first quarter of 2010.

We are looking to provide a forum for writers who specialize in poetry, short stories, screenplays, novels, articles, blogs . . . and we’re looking to have those writers read a sampling of their work to an audience.

Our conditions are as follows:

  • You must be 21 years of age, or older.
  • You must have been born in Woodaven — or be a current resident of Woodhaven.

If interested, drop us a line at:

woodhaven.residents@gmail.com

Please include a brief sample of the piece you’d like to read.  The length of time each person will have to read depends on how many participants we get.

Note: Unless you have an objection, your reading will be recorded and posted online on YouTube and Project Woodhaven.

Socks & Coats — Collecting For A Great Cause

December 9, 2009

There are two collections being held at the new offices of our Assemblyman, Mike Miller.

First, they have put out a call for White Socks.  These will be collected and shippped overseas to our brave young men and women who are serving our country.

Secondly, they are collecting Coats and Jackets for those who are in need of warm clothing.

These items can be dropped at his office, located at 83-91 Woodhaven Blvd.  That’s right at the intersection of Woodhaven Boulevard and Park Lane South (right where the guy used to sell the birdhouses, remember?)

The Office is currently open Mondays to Fridays from 10 AM to 5 PM, and Saturdays and Sundays from 12 PMto 3 PM.

If you have any questons, Assemblyman Miller — or a member of his staff — can be reached 24 hours a day at (718) 805-0950.

Volunteer Ambulance Corps Hosts Pasta Night Fundraiser

The Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association lends its support and encouragement to the Woodhaven Richmond Hill Volunteer Ambulance Corps, which has found itself in dire financial straits.  The WRBA encourages residents to attend a “pasta night” fundraiser hosted by the Volunteer Ambulance Corps on Sunday, December 13.

The Volunteer Ambulance Corps, which was started in 1965, has seen some of its major income sources slashed in the past year.  As a result, the organization is now having difficulty paying the utilities at its headquarters, located at 78-15 Jamaica Avenue.

The pasta night will feature all-you-can-eat pasta, salad, dessert, and coffee, as well as a D.J., karaoke, and 50/50 raffles.  It will occur from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Ambulance Corp’s headquarters.  Tickets are $15 per person.

“The Volunteer Ambulance Corps has long served the people of Woodhaven,” said WRBA President Vance Barbour.  “During these difficult times, it’s important to support organizations like this one, which has done so much.  The pasta night is a way to enjoy a great meal and support a great cause at the same time.”

The Volunteer Ambulance Corps’s headquarters has been the location of the WRBA’s meetings, which has strengthened the ties between the two organizations.

To RSVP for the pasta night, please call one of the following:
Kathy Sexton-Dalbey:  (718) 813-3869

Woodhaven Town Hall This Saturday (12/12)

December 7, 2009

Woodhaven’s next Town Hall meeting will be held this coming Saturday at 1 PM.  It will be held at the Woodhaven-Richmond Hill Ambulance Corp which is located at 78-15 Jamaica Avenue.  Refreshments will be served.

If you have never been to one of Woodhaven’s Town Halls, this is a great day to make your debut.  Chances are you’ll already be out and about — so stop by and make your voice heard.  Or, just come by to hear what others are saying about our neighborhood.

If you’ve got issues with your neighborhood — and let’s face it, who doesn’t have at least one issue? — then this is the place to come — to express yourself, to get advice, to get help — and you’ll meet many friendly neighbors in the process.
