Woodhaven Town Hall Meeting – Wed. at 8 PM

October 19, 2010

The Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association is holding its’ monthly Town Hall meeting this Wednesday, October 20th at 8 PM.  It is held at the Woodhaven Volunteer Ambulance Corps at 78-15 Jamaica Avenue.

Concerned about your community?  Want to be involved?  The WRBA is actively looking for folks who are looking to get more involved – to take part in what’s happening.  We have a dangerously low number of board members — and need people to step up and be involved.

Could that be you?  Come down on Wednesday, meet your neighbors, meet our elected officials — come down Wednesday and invest some time in your neighborhood.

If you have made Woodhaven your home, you should make the investment of your time to make sure it gets full representation.  In the past year, attendance at our meeting has increased — and our elected officials are paying more attention to us.  We know the city’s going to come looking for our library again, and our Firehouses — come down now and be part of your community — show them that we care.

Bless the Pets – October 30th

October 15, 2010

Emmanuel Church (on the corner of Woodhaven Boulevard and 91st Avenue)will be holding a special “BLESS THE PETS” Service on the front steps of the church on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30th at 11 AM.  It will be a short service, and our Minister will say a Blessing for each pet present.  ALL are invited to bring their “restrained” pet to receive this special blessing.

We went to this event last year, it was very nice.  You can read our coverage of this event here.   At the end of that coverage, I said that we planned on taking our cat Bubba to this event this year — sadly, Bubba passed away a few months back and we never got to take him.

We hope to see some of you animal lovers out there October 30th!

What’s Wrong With This?

October 8, 2010

Check out this story on Eyewitness news — here’s a screen grab —

Yeah, 107th Street is one of my favorite parts of Woodhaven….

Why can’t the media ever tell Woodhaven and Richmond Hill apart? Don’t they have access to Google?  Some time during the day they recognized their error and added a “Richmond Hill” tag to the story — but the text still says the fire happened in Woodhaven.

And what the heck’s up with that headline?  Firess? Who wrote that?  Gollum?

Support Woodhaven – Place an Ad in our Journal

October 8, 2010

On November 19th 2010, the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association will have its’ yearly fundraiser at Joe Abbraciamento (click here for details).  If you are unable to attend, you can still support your favorite community by taking out an ad in the Fundraiser Journal.  A copy of this booklet will be handed to each attendee — and this issue, celebrating the 175th Anniversary of Woodhaven — is sure to be a nice collectible.  And this year, the Journal will also be prominently featured on Project Woodhaven and the WRBA’s website.

In recognition of the state of our economy, we have lowered the prices of the journal ads to make them more affordable.  They are as follows:

Partial Page (B&W) $40

1/2 Page (B&W) $50

1/2 Page (Color) $60

Full Page (Color) $100

Back Inside Cover (Color) $125 – SOLD OUT

Front Inside Cover (color) $150 – SOLD OUT

Back Cover (color) $200 – SOLD OUT

To give you an idea of what it might look like, here is a mock up of the journal and examples of ads:

You don’t have to own a business to place an ad — maybe you want to offer up a congratulatory message to one of our honorees.  Or maybe you have moved away from Woodhaven, but you want to place a memorial to a loved one who was a resident —

You can email us the picture and the wording and we’ll put the ad together for you.  Or you can put the ad together yourself and e-mail it to us.  Either way is fine by us.  E-mail us at info@woodhaven-nyc.org or call us at 718-296-3735 for more information.

The WRBA has been fighting for our Library, our Firehouses, our Carousel — and against Noise, Graffiti, Crime — read about what we’ve done here — and we hope you’ll find that we’re an organization worthy of your support —

Toys For Tots Car Run – November 14th

October 7, 2010

On Sunday, November 14th, the East Coast Car Association will hold their 12th annual toy run.  And this year, for the first time ever, the starting point will be the parking lot at the Seuffert Bandshell in Forest Park.
The cars will begin gathering at 9 AM andd for the next few hours you will be able to see all manner of beautiful cars.  And then, at 12:30 PM, the cars will file out of the Parking Lot and head to St. Mary’s Hospital, whom they have collected and donated over 60 thousand dollars to since 1999.

This year, the East Coast Car Association is not collecting any toys.  Instead, at the request of St. Mary’s, they are asking participants of this year’s Toy Run to donate cash instead of toys. ECCA has pledged $25,000 to St. Mary’s Hospital to be used for a treatment room in the new Patient Pavilion.
