** Our February Meeting – Mark it on your calendars!  The WRBA will hold its next meeting on Saturday, February 22nd, at 1 PM at Emanuel United Church of Christ (91st Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard).  Katha Cato, of the Queens World Film Festival, will be giving a short presentation on their upcoming event in March (click here for details).  Also, each year the WRBA sponsors a baseball team for WORKS Little League – click here to see our 2013 team, The Royals! – we will be accepting donations at this meeting so that we can sponsor a team in 2014.  We hope to see you there!

** Do You Know This Woman? – The NYPD has found a woman who may have dementia or Alzheimer’s – she says she is from Woodhaven and that her name is Giselle Sajous – click here to see her – please share wherever you can so we can reunite her with her family!
** Woodhaven Boulevard Named NYC’s 2nd Most Deadliest Street – Woodhaven Boulevard came just behind Broadway as New York’s most dangerous street, netting 8 deaths in the last 3 years.  Click here for more details.
** Velázquez Visits St. Thomas – Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez paid a visit to St. Thomas the Apostle School last week to present them with a special gift – an American flag which has flown over the U.S. Capitol. While she was there, she delivered an inspirational speech to the young students in attendance. Click here to read about it – more pictures and video coming soon.
** 102nd Pct. Announces Drug Bust – The 102nd Precinct has announced a drug bust in Woodhaven  (click here for details).  Remember, for drug related issues call the Mayor’s Drug Hotline at 1-888-374-DRUG (3784).  And if you have any information about crimes, call 1-800-577-TIPS.
** Queens: Then & Now – Do you like old pictures of Queens? The Woodhaven Historical Society is holding an evening meeting, Monday, February 24th at 7 PM at Neir’s Tavern (87-48 78th St.)  The presentation, which is free to members of the public, consists of slides from the earliest days of Queens’ development, paired with photos from the exact same location today. ** Valentines for Vets – Mike Miller is collecting cards, candy (sugar free snacks a plus), toiletries and new clothing items for the men and women veterans hospitalized at St. Albans VA Hospital and the NYS Veterans Nursing Home. You can drop off donations at Mike’s Office (83- 91 Woodhaven Blvd.) until Tuesday, February 12th.  Click here for more info.

** Radio Free Woodhaven – Sister Catherine Feeney, Executive Director of the School Sisters of Notre Dame Educational Center, will be our guest of Friday Night’s Radio Free Woodhaven.  Click here to listen to the show – you can either listen to it live at 10 PM Friday night, or any time afterwards on demand.  SSNDEC is holding their annual Mardi Gras Celebration at Roma View on Crossbay Boulevard on Wednesday, February 26th from 6 to 10 PM. 102 Makes Major Drug Bust in Woodhaven

On Wednesday, January 15, 2014 the New York City Police Department’s Major Case Unit of Narcotics Borough Brooklyn North executed a search warrant at a mechanic auto shop located at 80-09 Atlantic Avenue.

An employee of the mechanic shop was selling cocaine out of the location. This individual was responsible for illegal drug activity which
adversely affects the quality of life for the members of the community. The Police need your help in keeping your neighborhood safe in drug free environment.

Civil Service Title: City Seasonal Aide
Office Title: Corps Member/ Jamaica Bay Restoration Corps
Salary: $11.11 per hour
Duration: 6 Months
Work Location: Queens

The Jamaica Bay Restoration Corps (JBRC) is designed to provide work experience, employment skills counseling and leadership skills while participants restore and develop the landscape in and around Jamaica Bay/ Rockaway Parks. This 6 month program will consist of 5 days per week of work on a crew or at a worksite. Staff will attend classes, seminars and job counseling sessions.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work as a member of a crew in Jamaica Bay/ Rockaway Parks performing manual labor.

• Gain experience in beach operations, restoring wetlands, erosion prevention; grounds keeping and trail restoration.

• Plant new trees, care for them and remove downed tree limbs and debris.

• Remove debris (including wood, metals, docks, concrete, housing, boats, and other inorganic floatables) from the sand areas in Jamaica Bay parks.

• Work with community residents and develop local connections through surveys and needs assessments.

• Some classes and job counseling will be offered to participants.

PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

• There are no formal education or experience requirements for this position.

• Ability to read and understand and obey orders.

• Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting heavy debris, standing, sweeping, raking and shoveling for extended periods of time.

• High school diploma or GED

• Good work ethic and an interest in working outdoors.

• Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn/ travel throughout Jamaica Bay/ Rockaway Parks area.
