** Participatory Budgeting Voting District 32 Tomorrow – You have one last chance to vote on items in this year’s Participatory Budgeting. This is a chance to fund repairs to sidewalks in Forest Park, to restore Whiting Square in time for the 100th Anniversary of WW1, to fund a few new Argus (police) cameras and more. We will have ballots at the Avenue Diner (91-06 Jamaica Avenue) tomorrow (Tuesday, April 5th) from 4 PM to 9 PM. This is for residents who live in Councilman Eric Ulrich’s district (map here, and zoom in if necessary).

** WRBA Town Hall –  The next Woodhaven Town Hall will be Saturday April 16th at Emanuel United Church of Christ (93-12 91st Avenue, at the corner of 91st Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard). Click here to view our entire schedule for 2016.

** American Legion 118 Auxiliary’s Basket Bonanza – Operation Purple offers military kids a free week of camp where they connect with other kids just like them. (In the military world, purple symbolizes all who serve). Join the American Legion Auxiliary on Sunday April 17th at their 1st Annual Basket Bonanza to win prizes (baskets of cheer, lottery tree, gift cards, etc.), socialize, and raise money to benefit Operation Purple. Admission is $20 per person and includes 1 sheet of tickets and refreshments. Space is limited, reservations with payment in advance is required. Mail checks to the American Legion at Woodhaven Post 118, c/o Joan Donovan, 34-19 41st Street #1L, LIC, New York 11101. Call 718-937-1615 for more information.

** Old Woodhaven Picture Slideshow – There will be a free slideshow with old news and pictures of Woodhaven – the topics are the year 1916, and April 1946 when a familiar face opened for the first time – which one? Come and find out! The slideshow will take place at the monthly meeting of the Woodhaven Historians, Tuesday, April 5th starting at 7 PM at the Avenue Diner (91-06 Jamaica Avenue).

** Gangster, Crime And Hollywood Tour – Metro NYC Tours will be giving tours of some of the more notorious spots of Woodhaven – visit where gangsters and Hollywood movies were shot. The tour is capped by lunch at NYC’S oldest bar, the historic Neir’s Tavern. You will have chips and salsa on the table to nibble. A choice of entree from a prix fixe menu for lunch with either 1 glass of beer or soda. Cost is $45 per person. Click here for more details.

** Blanket Collection for Shelter Kids – Assemblyman Mike Miller is collecting blankets and reading material for children in NYC Shelters. This drive will end on April 28th, click here for details.

** Rain Barrel Giveaway – Assemblyman Mike Miller and Sen. Joe Addabbo are sponsoring a Rain Barrel Giveaway this Sunday, April 10th. Click here for info on how you can register for your own free rain barrel.

** Defensive Driving Class – There will be a Defensive Driving Class on Saturday, April 16th from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM at Emanuel United Church of Christ (93-12 91st Avenue, at the corner of 91st Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard). The class will be held in the downstairs library. A light breakfast will be served. By taking this class you will receive a 10% discount on your insurance for 3 years and have 4 points removed from any moving violations you may have. Please call Emanuel at 718-849-1153 to register.

** The Return of the Forest Park Carousel – Our beloved NYC Landmark has opened its’ 2016 season on Friday, March 25th. Click here to visit their site to view their entire 2016 schedule of events and entertainment for the kids.

** WORKS Little League Parade – Saturday, April 9th, kicking off from Equity Park at 10 AM. Come out and cheer on the kids of WORKS Little League as they leave PS 60, march down to Jamaica Avenue and along Jamaica Avenue to Forest Parkway before heading to the bandshell. Click here for coverage of last year’s parade!

** Cemetery Green Project – The ongoing restoration of the historic Wyckoff-Snedicker cemetery continues this Saturday, April 9th, from 9 AM to 12 PM.  Come out and work with your friends and neighbors, get some fresh air and exercise, in the oldest, most historic spot in Woodhaven. If you aren’t familiar with the cemetery, it is behind All Saint’s Church, at 96th Street and 86th Avenue.

** CPR Classes – John Bennett from the WRHVAC will be offering CPR Classes on Saturday, April 23rd at All nations Baptist Church Annex (86-74 80th Street) from 10 AM to 1 PM. The cost is $40 (no checks or credit cards, cash only). Call John at 347-829-3504 or 516-643-6746 for more information.

** Recycling Event – The popular recycling event in Forest Park sponsored by Assemblyman Mike Miller and Sen. Joe Addabbo is back!  Sunday, April 24th, 10 AM- 2 PM – Rain or Shine! The George Seuffert Sr. Bandshell parking lot located in Forest Park on Forest Park Drive, one block west of Woodhaven Blvd in Woodhaven. Items that will be accepted for recycling are: clothing & textiles (clothing, coats, bedding, linens, paired shoes, scarves, belts, hats and handbags — ALL ITEMS MUST BE CLEAN & DRY), electronics (including computers, monitors, cell phones, servers, fax machines, typewriters, TV’s, PDA’s, scanners, copiers, printers, batteries, laptops, cameras, wires, power strips, chargers, cable boxes, fans, air conditioners, telephones and VCR tapes — NO APPLIANCES), paper (including paper fiber and confidential papers — NO CARDBOARD — all paper will be shredded while you watch to ensure confidentiality), Carpeting (‘residential type’ carpeting and foam padding only), household goods (including dishes, glasses, silverware, lamps, pots and drapes), books & eyeglasses accepted as Donations.  No medications or mostly-full cans of paint will be accepted. ** No Standing, No Peace – Click here to read about a Woodhaven’s school’s fight to get a no standing zone to safely load/unload students (some with special needs) and to alleviate traffic issues each morning and afternoon. Click here for more info.

** ATV and Motorcycle Awareness – The NYPD is working hard to stop the dangerous conditions created from the illegal use of ATVs/motorbikes throughout the City. As the weather gets warmer, we acknowledge the desire to get outside and enjoy New York City but street and road conditions must be kept safe by following the law. We need your help to thwart the hazardous conditions created by illegally owned or operated ATVs and motorbikes. If you observe groups of motorcycles/dirt bikes/ATVs on public streets driving recklessly, please call 911 and report the dangerous condition. If you have information on storage facilities where dirt bikes/ATVs are stored, please report it to 311. Note: When you do report this to the NYPD, please let us know so we can follow up on your report.

** Rezoning Draws Some Heat – The city’s move to rezone neighborhoods to create more affordable housing has drawn some heat from our local community board, click here to read more about it.

 

** Noise Survey – The NY State Comptroller’s Office is conducting a survey on noise in New York City neighborhoods. Click here to let them know about your experience with noise in Woodhaven. Also, click here for the survey in SpanishRussian, or Mandarin.

** Wonderful Woodhaven Street Fair – Please note that this year’s Woodhaven Street Fair, sponsored by the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation and the Woodhaven Business Improvement District will be held on Sunday, October 16th from Noon to 6 PM, from Woodhaven Boulevard to 80th Street. There will be, as usual, vendors, food, music, rides – an event we all look forward to ever year. Save the date!

** Fall Harvest Festival – The annual Fall Festival sponsored by CM Eric Ulrich will take place on Saturday, October 15th from 12 Noon to 3 PM.  This is a great event for the whole family with rides and activities for the kids, a pumpkin patch and more!  Click here for highlights from a previous year’s event!

** Participatory Budgeting District 30 – The Budget Delegates will be showcasing the projects for District 30 (CM Elizabeth Crowley) on Thursday, March 24 at Ridgewood Library at 6pm. Also, they are looking for volunteers of all types – they need canvassers, phone bankers, and people to run polling locations – if you would like to volunteer or want more information, please CLICK HERE.

** Goodfellas Crime Lecture in Woodhaven – In December 1978, a group of masked gunmen pulled off the largest cash robbery in US History right here in Queens. The Lufthansa heist netted about $5.875 million ($5 million in cash and $875,000 in jewelry) and the story behind that crime has led to numerous books and movies, most notably “Goodfellas,” which filmed scenes right here in Woodhaven, at Neir’s Tavern. One of the cargo workers that evening, Kerry Whalen, was bludgeoned and held at gunpoint and his experiences with the crime and the ensuing investigation led to his book “Inside the Lufthansa HEI$T: The FBI Lied” (Click here: bit.ly/fbi-lied). Recently, Mr. Whalen testified in the trial of Mr. Vincent Asaro, and he’ll be the guest speaker at the Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society on Wednesday, March 30th at 1 PM at Emanuel United Church of Christ (91st Avenue & Woodhaven Boulevard). We will also have a presentation on the filming of Goodfellas and some Goodfellas trivia along with the discussion with Mr. Whalen. ** Woodhaven Cemetery Project Kicks Off 2016 – The ongoing conversion of Woodhaven’s historic cemetery from an eyesore to an eye opener kicked off the 2016 season last week. Due to so many local events, turnout was light, but a lot was accomplished. Click here for highlights and learn a bit about the people who are buried there. Learn about the old man and the little girl — brother and sister, buried together, or the tragedy of the Eldert Twins. Cleaning up the cemetery is fun – but it’s also the right and decent thing to do. The next cleanup is Saturday, April 9th from 9 AM to 12 PM – and the group will be joined by a descendant of one of the founding families in Woodhaven that’s buried in the cemetery!  Note: The Board of the Victorian Society NY has voted to award the Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society a $350 grant towards supplies for the restoration of the Wyckoff-Snedicker Cemetery in 2016.

** DEP Wants To Help Stop Leaks / Save Money – The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)  announced a series of public outreach events to educate New Yorkers about the high cost of residential water leaks. This announcement comes too late for the event locally, but there is still good info here.

** All Saints 85th Street Services – All Saints’ / Todos los Santos Lutheran Church (87-34 85 Street) sent along the following information regarding worship services: Palm Sunday- March 20th at 9AM, Maundy Thursday- March 24 at 6PM, Good Friday- March 25 at 11AM.  Also there will be a Free Live Presentation of the Passion at 7:30PM in Spanish. And Easter Sunday Mass will be on March 27 at 9AM in English / 11AM in Spanish.

** THIS WEEKEND – 311 Weekend Fundraiser for Special Needs Kids –  Note: We need more pledges to help the children of the Challenger Division. Click here if you’d like to make a small pledge.  Friday (3/11) is the start of 311 Weekend – a great way to help the community *AND* help some local kids with special needs. Basically, next weekend we need people to call 311 and report issues around the community that need addressed — broken streetlights, graffiti covered walls, illegal signs, illegal conversions, illegal curb cuts — and we need people to make small pledges — 10 cents per 311, 20 cents per 311, etc. And the money will go to the Challenger Division of WORKS Little League (formerly Rich-Haven) which is for kids with special needs, kids with autism, etc.

** Woodhaven Women Honored – Congratulations to Woodhaven’s Patti Eggers and JoAnn Bartos, who will be honored by Assemblyman Mike Miller as Women of Distinction at 7 PM on Thursday, March 10th at One Stop Richmond Hill Community Center (110-08 Jamaica Avenue, Richmond Hill). ** Wyckoff-Snedicker Cemetery Restoration – The ongoing restoration of the Woodhaven Founder’s Cemetery kicks off 2016 with a get-together on Saturday, March 12th from 9 AM to 12 PM. The cemetery is on 96th Street and 86th Avenue behind All Saints. This year, the focus of this green-project will be shifting from cleanup to beautification.
** Participatory Budgeting District 30 – The Budget Delegates will be showcasing the projects for District 30 (CM Elizabeth Crowley) at 2 events this month – (1) Tuesday, March 15 at Maspeth Town Hall at 6pm and (2) Thursday, March 24 at Ridgewood Library at 6pm. Also, they are looking for volunteers of all types – they need canvassers, phone bankers, and people to run polling locations – if you would like to volunteer or want more information, please CLICK HERE.
** Benefit for Boys & Girls Club Featuring Schmidt’s – The Boys & Girls Club of Metro Queens (11th and Atlantic) is hosting a culinary and cultural celebration / fundraiser. ** Goodfellas Crime Lecture in Woodhaven – In December 1978, a group of masked gunmen pulled off the largest cash robbery in US History right here in Queens. The Lufthansa heist netted about $5.875 million ($5 million in cash and $875,000 in jewelry) and the story behind that crime has led to numerous books and movies, most notably “Goodfellas,” which filmed scenes right here in Woodhaven, at Neir’s Tavern. One of the cargo workers that evening, Kerry Whalen, was bludgeoned and held at gunpoint and his experiences with the crime and the ensuing investigation led to his book “Inside the Lufthansa HEI$T: The FBI Lied” (Click here: bit.ly/fbi-lied). Recently, Mr. Whalen testified in the trial of Mr. Vincent Asaro, and he’ll be the guest speaker at the Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society on Wednesday, March 30th at 1 PM at Emanuel United Church of Christ (91st Avenue & Woodhaven Boulevard). We will also have a presentation on the filming of Goodfellas and some Goodfellas trivia along with the discussion with Mr. Whalen. ** SBS To Cost $400 Million – It was revealed last week that DOT now admits that the cost for the proposed Woodhaven Boulevard Select Bus Service changes are double what they originally claimed. The WRBA believes that the proposed changes to Woodhaven Boulevard are being forced on us by City Hall and by city agencies that have repeatedly failed our community. We are asking all of our residents to take 2 minutes to fill out this petition. This is critical to ensuring our voices are heard. Please share the petition website, www.SaveOurStreets.nyc, with family, friends, and neighbors and ask them to sign it.

** 311 Weekend Fundraiser for Special Needs Kids – Next Friday (3/11) is the start of 311 Weekend – a great way to help the community *AND* help some local kids with special needs. Basically, next weekend we need people to call 311 and report issues around the community that need addressed — broken streetlights, graffiti covered walls, illegal signs, illegal conversions, illegal curb cuts — and we need people to make small pledges — .10 per 311, .20 per 311, etc. And the money will go to the Challenger Division of WORKS Little League (formerly Rich-Haven) which is for kids with special needs, kids with Autism, etc. Click here for details.

** Update of Pop’s from the WBID – Some updates on Pop’s Restaurant, from Maria Thomson of the Woodhaven Business Improvement District:

1. The new persons involved in the Restaurant are renters, not owners and Woodhaven Residents;

2. The owner of the Restaurant stipulated that all renovations or changes must be approved by him, this was not done;

3. They did not have permission to renovate (destroy) Pop’s as we knew it;

4. They, the renters, have applied for a Liquor License for Wine, Beer and Liquor;

5. The SLA Liquor License that was previously in place was for ONLY Wine and Beer;

6. The owner of the building is also very incensed by their actions that they sadly destroyed this, our beloved Woodhaven Restaurant;

UPDATE on Pops Restaurant

A Stop Work Order has been issued by the Buildings Department against Pops restaurant for Work Without Permits, thank you Michael for the Picture. So, all of this destruction was made illegally. During the inspection the Department of Buildings found additional problems with the electricity and plumbing. The WBID will be monitoring this location and keep you aware.

** Alert: Frigid Weather Expected – The New York City Emergency Management Department today urged New Yorkers to prepare for upcoming extreme cold weather. Frigid weather is expected Thursday night through Monday, with temperatures plummeting to single digits with sub-zero wind chills Saturday night through Sunday. Seniors, infants, the homeless, and those with chronic medical conditions are at increased risk of health problems from the extreme cold. Make sure you take all the appropriate measures to stay warm and safe – click here for more information.

** Pat Sexton – The Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association was very sad to learn that Pat Sexton, one of the founding members of the Woodhaven-Richmond Hill Volunteer Ambulance Corp, has passed away. Our condolences go out to her daughters Kathy and Kelly and all of her friends and family. The wake will be held this Saturday and Sunday at Leahy-McDonald Funeral Home (111-02 Atlantic Avenue) from 4 to 8 pm.

 
** WRBA Town Hall –  The next Woodhaven Town Hall will be held Saturday, February 20th 2016 @ 12:00pm at American Legion Post 118 – 89-02 91st Street – (91st St and 89th Ave). ** Save Our Streets – The WRBA believes that the proposed changes to Woodhaven Boulevard are being forced on us by City Hall and by city agencies that have repeatedly failed our community. We are asking all of our residents to take 2 minutes to fill out this petition. This is critical to ensuring our voices are heard. Please share the petition website, www.SaveOurStreets.nyc, with family, friends, and neighbors and ask them to sign it.

** Queens Memory Project on Radio Free Woodhaven – The Queens Memory Project, a collaboration between the Queen Library and Queens College, is an effort to gather the memories of the residents of Queens – photographs, spoken or written word memories – into an online database everyone can enjoy. Maggie Schreiner will be the guest Friday Night Live at 10 (click here at showtime to listen LIVE) to discuss this massive project. The Queens Memory Project will be the guests at the Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society on Wednesday, February 24th at 1 PM at Emanuel United Church of Christ (91st Ave and Woodhaven Boulevard) to discuss this project. Anyone bringing photographs or other interesting material from Woodhaven’s past will be able to have it digitally scanned on to a flash drive – you will keep the original and the flash drive! Note: The Queens memory Project will also be at Neir’s scanning in pictures brought in by residents on Saturday, March 5th from 12 until 3 at Neir’s Tavern.
** Free Valentine’s Day Party and Movie ♥ ♥ ♥  – It’s going to be very cold this weekend, so come warm up with some hot chocolate at the Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society’s FREE Valentine’s Day Party this Saturday from 12 Noon until 3 PM at Emanuel United Church of Christ (91st Ave and Woodhaven Boulevard). There will be cake and coffee and the door prize is a heart-shaped box of chocolate from Schmidt’s Candy. And there will be a showing of the Emmy-Award winning film,Queen of the Stardust Ballroom, which filmed scenes right here in Woodhaven in 1974. ** WORKS Little League Registration – WORKS will be holding registration at 84-01 Jamaica Avenue (on the 2nd Floor above the bank at the corner of Forest Parkway) next Friday night, February 19th, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Registration for a child costs $100 – which includes a uniform – and you are given $75 worth of raffle tickets to sell – you keep the money for the tickets that you sell. ** 102nd Precinct Community Council Meeting – Come out to meet the members of the 102nd Precinct on Tues, February 16, 7 PM – 9 PM at the Richmond Hill Library (Basement) 118-14 Hillside Ave in Richmond Hill. At the last Community Board 9 meeting, Officer Jose Severino announced that 14 new recruits are joining the 102.

** American Legion St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon – Woodhaven’s American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting a St. Patrick’s Day luncheon on Sunday, March 13th from 1PM to 5PM. They will be serving a traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner with Irish soda bread, beer, wine, soda and dessert.There will be music and dancing with DJ Walter, a 50/50 and lots of raffles! One of his murderers was the youngest person EXECUTED in NY State. ** Woman Rescued from Strack Pond – An emotionally disturbed woman was rescued after crashing through the ice at Strack Pond in Forest Park. Some initial reports stated that there were two children also in the pond, but those reports were unfounded and her two children were located and were safe and sound. Click here for more info.
** DSNY Answers For Jonas Performance – Representatives from the Department of Sanitation were questioned about the DSNY’s performance during the major snowstorm named Jonas at this week’s CB9 meeting (click here for the full story). If you recall, the DSNY snow plows did not get to Woodhaven for a few daysprompting a press conference demanding action by CM Eric Ulrich.
 
** Collecting for the Troops – Woodhaven’s American Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary Post 118 have adopted a platoon, the 10th Mountain Division serving in Afghanistan, and they have been collecting items, boxing them up, and shipping them out. They would like to thank everyone who has donated so generously so far, and let you know that they are still collecting donations of laundry detergent pods, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorants, body wash/shampoo travel size, baby wipes, baby powder, razors, floss, chewing gum, and assorted candies . Please drop off your donations at Spirare Cleaners right next door to the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association (84-20 Jamaica Avenue). ** Valentines For Vets – Assemblyman Mike Miller thanked the community for coming out and supporting the annual drive to collect gifts for the vets living at the New York State Veterans Home at St. Albans. ** Woodhaven Speed Humps Approved – Community Board 9 unanimously approved a few speed humps in our area. One is along the service road between Woodhaven Boulevard and the Forest Park Co-Ops. Click here to read more about where the new humps will be located.
** Woodhaven Cop Subject of Classic Drama – In 1938, Officer Charles Glasco of 87th Street was on duty in Manhattan when he walked into the chaotic scene caused by a young man standing on a 17th Floor ledge, threatening to jump. For the next 11 hours, he kept the young man talking in a heroic attempt to save his life. The incident was turned into a film called Fourteen Hours – and it was the screen debut of Grace Kelly. ** Murder in Woodhaven – Arrest Made – NYC’s first murder in 2016 happened right here in our community – Fabian Maliza, 24, has been charged with second-degree for the murder of 19-year old Joceline Romo, who was discovered in her home at 86th Street near 91st Avenue . Note: Domestic Violence can happen anywhere. If you are a victim of domestic violence, or you know someone who is experiencing it, please check out the following resources from the NYPD and this useful page from the Manhattan DA Office. ** SBS at CB9 – Both the DOT and MTA will make a presentation on SBS at the next Community Board 9 meeting, Tuesday, January 12, 7:45 p.m. at Queens Borough Hall, Room 213 (120-55 Queens Blvd, Kew Gardens). ** Alert: Yellow Curbs in Driveways – We have received reports that residents have received citations from DOT for painting yellow curbs on their driveways. The warnings state that if they do not remove the paint in 30 days, either by powerwashing or painting over it with battleship gray base paint, they will receive a summons ranging from $250 to $750.

** 12 Infamous NYC Crime Scene Locations – Wednesday, January 27th at 1 PM at Emanuel United Church of Christ (91st Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard). Retired NYPD Detective Ike Ilkiw walks us through some of the most infamous crimes in NYC’s history and tells us what it was like to be a police officer and a consultant for movies and TV shows. Ike grew up in Cypress Hills and is the founder of NYC Adventure Tours.

** DSNY Christmas Tree Collections – The NYC Department of Sanitation announced that it will begin its annual Christmas tree curbside collection program on Monday, January 4. The curbside collection of real trees will run through Friday, January 15. Residents should remove all tree stands, tinsel, lights and ornaments from the trees before being brought to the curb for collection. Clean, non-bagged Christmas trees left on the curb between January 4 and January 15 will be chipped, mixed with leaves and recycled into compost for the city’s parks, institutions and community gardens.
 
** The Birth of the EL – As 1916 began, the hot topic of conversation in and around Woodhaven was the ongoing construction of the elevated train line (known as the “EL”) along Jamaica Avenue. The project had been controversial for several years with many people, organizations and interests weighing in with their opinions. Click here to read more.

** Cemetery Cleanup Featured on NY1 – The ongoing restoration of Woodhaven’s historic cemetery on 96th Street was recently featured on NY1. You can also click here for an extended video of the cleanup, which meets on the 2nd Saturday of every month, from 9 Am to 12 PM.

** Santa Parade – Did you see this year’s Santa Parade down Jamaica Avenue? Well, here’s a treat — the 2015 Santa Parade re-imagined as a 1970s-style Super-8 home movie!

** Estate Sale in Richmond Hill – Looking for something to so the day after Christmas? There will be an estate sale this weekend on Saturday 12/26 from 10-3 and Sunday 11-2. The address is 102-34 88 Avenue in Richmond Hill. There is quite a bit of stuff both large and small – glassware, figurines also books; and lots of record albums mostly Spanish music 78s and 45s, also classic VHS tapes like Flash Gordon, Oliver & Hardy, The Sea Hawk, Casablanca and items (paintings, onyx statues) from  travels to Mexico and Costa Rica. There is also a complete set of dishes service for 12 and 4 piece set of glasses again service for 12 and many Lord of the Rings figures (mint in the box).

** Forest Hills Gardens Holiday Tour – Sun, Dec 27 from 2 PM – 4 PM. This free tour will visit historic sites including the storied Forest Hills Inn & Tea Garden, PS 101, The Leslie, Adolph Weinman’s WWI Soldiers & Sailors Memorial, Church-in-the-Gardens, & the Christian Science Church. ** Historic New York: Monuments of Prospect Park – This guided walk will lead through the paths of Prospect Park as your Ranger guide retells the stories and forgotten history behind many of the monuments placed within. Sunday, December 27th at 1 PM. Click here for details.

** Graffiti on the Rise – Here’s a report from CBS-2 News on how graffiti in several communities around NYC have gone back to the bad old days of the 70s and the 80s. We saw reports of this in the media last year, so it’s not exactly old news. The WRBA has been fighting graffiti for years – not just in words, in deeds, out on the streets, cleaning up (see herehere and here for examples). Spring is only 88 days away! Start thinking now about joining us next year, making the neighborhood beautiful.

** Gangs In Woodhaven – Recent reports (click here) indicated that gang activity is on the rise here in Queens (locally, the Woodhaven Mayans and G-FLY were indicated as being active). Are you seeing anything on YOUR block? Please, let us know. Your identity and privacy will be protected. Gang activity in Woodhaven is not new (click here for a sad reminder) and we must work together with the NYPD to stop it from spreading in our community.

** Arson / Potential Hate Crime in Woodhaven – There was a shameful incident here in Woodhaven 80th Street and 89th Ave early Thanksgiving morning (approximately 1:20 AM on 11/26/15). A man set fire to a Hindu Religion Flag / Jhandi Flag in front of a resident’s house. The FDNY was called and the fire was extinguished quickly – there were no injuries. Clearly this is a disturbing act and we’d like to help the police to find and question this man – click here to view security camera footage of the incident. If you recognize him, please call the 102 Precinct at 718-805-3200 — or, if you would prefer, email the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association.

** Special Select Bus Service Forum – The Greater Woodhaven Development is sponsoring a forum to discuss the SBS (Select Bus Service) proposal. It is being held on Monday, November 30th, at American Legion Hall Post 118, 89-02 91st Street – (91st St and 89th Ave) and starts at 7:30 PM. If you have an opinion about this proposal (pro or con), and what happens to Woodhaven Boulevard, you should make every effort to attend this meeting.

** WRBA Sends SBS Letter to DOT Commissioner Garcia – The Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association has compiled a list of issues with the SBS proposal (and the process that led to the proposal) along with a request that alternative solutions to closing lanes to automobiles. One suggested area for study is the potential for using the old LIRR right of way to run buses. Click here for the press release and the letter – a must read before Monday night’s meeting.

** Holiday Events – The Woodhaven Business Improvement District is again sponsoring its annual “Holidays in Woodhaven Weekend.”  The “Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting” Ceremony will be held on Friday, December 4, at 6:30 pm at the Forest Parkway Plaza (intersection of Forest Parkway and Jamaica Avenue).  Look for the Costumed Characters and Santa Claus.  On Saturday, December 5, the “Welcome Santa to Woodhaven Parade” will take place.  The Parade will assemble at 11:30 am at 96th Street and Jamaica Avenue (site of Woodhaven Manor) and will proceed along Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue to Dexter Court. Make sure to bring the children.  Free Goodies and Santa Hats will be distributed at the beginning and at the end of the Parade.

** Want to March in the Santa Parade?  Residents of Woodhaven are invited to march in the Santa Parade — join with the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association — or with the Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society —  come down Saturday, December 5th and meet us at 11:30 at 96th Street and Jamaica Avenue.

 ** Historical Society – Research Group – Meets the first Tuesday of every month; next meeting is Tuesday, December 1st at 7 PM at the Avenue Diner (91-06 Jamaica Avenue). Old newspaper articles, old pictures – lots of interesting information and history projects.  At a recent meeting, walking tours of Woodhaven for next Spring/Summer were discussed.  Click here to see the list of locations they’ve put together so far.

** All Saints Dinner Dance – All Saints Episcopal Church is holding their annual Dinner Dance, Friday December 4th at the Woodhaven Manor (96th Street and Jamaica Avenue). ** Toy Drive for Homeless Children – Neir’s Tavern (87-48 78th Street) is holding a Toy Drive for homeless children from December 1st through December 20th. Also, Comedy Night returns Saturday, December 12th at 9 PM. This show is being recorded live for television. All proceeds benefit Highland Park Community Development Corp.

** No-Cost Breast Cancer Screening – The American-Italian Cancer Foundation’s (AICF) mobile, No-Cost Breast Cancer Screening Program which provides mammograms and clinical breast exams to uninsured and medically underserved New York City women is scheduled to conduct screenings in Woodhaven on Thursday, July 23, 2015 in front of Queens County Savings Bank (NYCB) at  93-22 Jamaica Avenue. ** Graffiti Cleanup to Fight Autism –  On Saturday, July 25, the Block Association will lead a group of volunteers in painting every mailbox in the neighborhood.  Many of Woodhaven’s more than 100 mailboxes have been vandalized with graffiti.  The WRBA will solicit pledges from residents to support the clean-up effort.  All proceeds will be donated to New York Families for Autistic Children (NYFAC). Residents may pledge donations (for example, 25 cents per mailbox painted) and may cap their pledges (for example, 50 cents per mailbox, up to a maximum of $25).
** Blood Drive at Emanuel – Emanuel United Church of Christ, (93-12 91st Avenue) will be hosting their 8th Annual Warren Ackermann Memorial Blood Drive on Saturday, July 25th 9 AM to 2:45 PM.  Their goal this year is 40 pints of blood and your donation will help to save up to three lives. This blood drive is always a fun day with good people, good refreshments and a good raffle.  Walk-ins welcome or you may call 718-849-1153 for an appointment. For questions concerning medical eligibility, please call 1-800-688-0900. Note: New York Blood Center is also offering a Donor Advantage Program, so each time you donate blood you will earn points.  Once you accumulate 800 points, you can then redeem your points for a wide variety of gifts, gift cards or donate your points to selected charitable organizations.
** Giant Rummage Sale at STA – The annual rummage sale at St. Thomas the Apostle in Monsignor Mulz Hall (88-08 Jamaica Avenue) starts next week – click here for dates of the sale and drop-off information.
** National Night Out Against Crime – The 2015 Night Out Against Crime will take place Tuesday, August 4th at the Buddy Monument in Richmond Hill. This is always a fun time – and a great opportunity to get to know your local police officers. Click here for highlights from last year’s event.
** Woodhaven & Ozone Park: Life on the Border – The Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society will be giving a presentation of old pictures of the area between our two communities on Tuesday, August 11th starting at 7:30. Highlights include the Grosjean Factory and Mansion, the Arrival and Disappearance of the Railroad, and the Cyclone of 1895.
** 50s Woodhaven Drive-In Party – On Saturday August 22nd, the Woodhaven Historical Society will bring back the excitement of the Drive-In Movies — Coming Attractions and Short Films — the great music on the speakers — running to the Snack Bar to get Popcorn or Hot Dogs. ** Joe Addabbo’s Annual Thank A Vet BBQ – Sen. Joe Addabbo will be hosting his Thank a Vet BBQ at his office, as he has done for the last few years, on Saturday, August 29th from 12 PM to 3 PM. Joe’s Office is at 159-53 101st Street in Howard Beach and everyone is welcome!

** New Bus-Only Lanes on Woodhaven Boulevard – New Bus-Only lane rules (North of Metropolitan Avenue) will go into effect very soon (click here for details).
 
** Woodhaven Cemetery Cleanup – Year One – The Woodhaven Clutural & Historical Society along with dedicated volunteers from the community and the STA Woodhaven History Club have been working hard for the past 12 months on the Wyckoff-Snedicker Family Cemetery on 96th Street – click here for a progress report. The next cleanup is on Saturday August 8th (always the 2nd Saturday) from 9 AM to 12 PM. Volunteers welcomed and needed. Note: At the last cleanup, a lost tombstone was returned to the cemetery – click here for the story.
** Assemblyman Miller’s Newsletter – Assemblyman Mike Miller’s latest newsletter is out – click here to read it. Mike will be hosting “Assemblyman in Your Area” events all over the community during the summer, including dates at the WRBA Office – the entire schedule is in the newsletter!
 
** Participatory Budgeting Comes to District 30 – Over the past 2 years, residents of the District 32 portion of Woodhaven took part in the Participatory Budgeting process. Starting next year, all residents of Woodhaven will be able to take part as District 30 will join the process in which residents help decide how to spend capital funds.
** CM Ulrich Discusses Budget  Councilman Eric Ulrich called into Radio Free Woodhaven last week to discuss the budget passed by the NY City Council and what it means to Woodhaven – the best news is that there will be more police officers, Saturday Library hours, and no cuts to our Senior Centers or our Firehouses. Eric also discussed a $175,000 upgrade to our Forest Park Dog Run – click here to hear the entire interview.
** Plan B at Forest Park – Last week’s Beatles Tribute at the Bandshell was canceled due to predictions of bad weather – but there was a crowd and you know the old saying – the show must go on! Check our community calendar for the full schedule of community events, including concerts in Forest Park.
** Woodhaven WW2 Vet Returns to Neir’s – 90-year old WW2 Vet William Burlingame was married to his wife Peggy in 1946. They held the reception there as well. Mr. Burlingame returned to Neir’s for the first time in many decades – click here to read, or click here to see the story on NY1.
** Town Hall for Veterans – The Queens Library is hosting a Town Hall for Veterans on Saturday, August 1st from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Central Library on Merrick Boulevard in Jamaica.
