** WRBA Town Hall –  This Saturday! The very first Woodhaven Town Hall of 2016 will be held this coming Saturday, January 16th 2016 @ 12:00pm at American Legion Post 118 – 89-02 91st Street – (91st St and 89th Ave). What are some of the issues you’d like to see covered in 2016? Email us at info@woodhaven-nyc.org and let us know! Better yet, come out to one of our Town Halls in 2016 and share your thoughts!
** 2016 Town Hall Schedule Released – The WRBA has released the entire schedule for 2016, click here to view it.
** Murder in Woodhaven – Arrest Made – NYC’s first murder in 2016 happened right here in our community – Fabian Maliza, 24, has been charged with second-degree for the murder of 19-year old Joceline Romo, who was discovered in her home at 86th Street near 91st Avenue . Note: Domestic Violence can happen anywhere. If you are a victim of domestic violence, or you know someone who is experiencing it, please check out the following resources from the NYPD and this useful page from the Manhattan DA Office. ** SBS at CB9 – Both the DOT and MTA will make a presentation on SBS at the next Community Board 9 meeting, Tuesday, January 12, 7:45 p.m. at Queens Borough Hall, Room 213 (120-55 Queens Blvd, Kew Gardens). CB9 has yet to take a position on this proposal. Please note that if you’d like to speak at the Public Forum, you must sign up to do so when you get to the meeting (and you are limited to 3 minutes)Click here for the meeting’s agenda. ** Alert: Yellow Curbs in Driveways – We have received reports that residents have received citations from DOT for painting yellow curbs on their driveways. The warnings state that if they do not remove the paint in 30 days, either by powerwashing or painting over it with battleship gray base paint, they will receive a summons ranging from $250 to $750.

** Dr. Paul Fish on Radio Free Woodhaven – Dr. Fish, who has operated as a vet on Jamaica Avenue for over 30 years, will be the guest caller this Friday at 10 PM –click here to listen to the show LIVE. Dr. Fish has years of experience as a board game designer and is in the process of releasing one entitled Black Eagles Over Belgium, covering the Battles of Ligny, Wavre, and Plancenoit (battles taking place near Waterloo). Call in to speak with the host (646) 378-1612.
** Queens Distance Runners in Forest Park – The Queens Distance Runners are holding a group run this Sunday morning at 9 AM (click here for more info). Starting at the Forest Park Bandshell, they’ll navigate 6.5 miles of Forest Park’s running paths, and end up in the heart of Glendale, near the world-famous Glendale Diner.
** Slideshow of Old Pictures Queens at Neir’s Tavern – Historian and Author Jason Antos will be at Neir’s Tavern on Thursday, January 21st at 7 PM to show pictures from his new book “Images of America: Corona – The Early Years.”  Jason was recently a guest on Radio Free Woodhaven, click here to hear his interview.
** Free Concert at All Saints 96th Street – Patricia M. Gosnell will deliver an Epiphany recital of sacred music for soprano and organ, featuring works classic and modern, Saturday, January 23rd at 3 PM at All Saints Episcopal Church 85-45 96th St.
** 12 Infamous NYC Crime Scene Locations – Wednesday, January 27th at 1 PM at Emanuel United Church of Christ (91st Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard). Retired NYPD Detective Ike Ilkiw walks us through some of the most infamous crimes in NYC’s history and tells us what it was like to be a police officer and a consultant for movies and TV shows. Ike grew up in Cypress Hills and is the founder of NYC Adventure Tours.
** SSNDEC Mardi Gras – The School Sisters Notre Dame Educational Center for Women’s annual Mardi Gras Celebration is scheduled for Tuesday, February 9, 2016 from 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM at Roma View Catering (160-05 Cross Bay Blvd, Howard Beach). ** Forest Park App – Through funding from Elizabeth Crowley, the students of Grover Cleveland High School have developed an app that will make walking and running in Forest Park and Highland Park fun and interactive. Maps, Guides, Science Notes, and tools for Bird Watchers – this app promises to be very fun. Check out the coverage on Eyewitness News and NY1.
** DSNY Christmas Tree Collections – The NYC Department of Sanitation announced that it will begin its annual Christmas tree curbside collection program on Monday, January 4. The curbside collection of real trees will run through Friday, January 15. Residents should remove all tree stands, tinsel, lights and ornaments from the trees before being brought to the curb for collection. Clean, non-bagged Christmas trees left on the curb between January 4 and January 15 will be chipped, mixed with leaves and recycled into compost for the city’s parks, institutions and community gardens.
** The Birth of the EL – As 1916 began, the hot topic of conversation in and around Woodhaven was the ongoing construction of the elevated train line (known as the “EL”) along Jamaica Avenue. The project had been controversial for several years with many people, organizations and interests weighing in with their opinions. Click here to read more.

** Adopt-A-Troop – Ending Soon! American Legion Post 118 wants to THANK EVERYONE who has donated so generously – they say they are very close to their goal. If you missed previous announcements, American legion Post 118 has adopted a platoon, the 10th Mountain Division, serving in Afghanistan and they have the following requests from the troops: Laundry detergent pods, Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Deodorant, Body wash/shampoo travel size, Baby wipes, Baby powder, Razors, Floss, Chewing gum, Candies assorted. Please drop off your donations at Spirare Cleaners right next door to the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association (84-20 Jamaica Avenue). Update: They are looking for extra sugar free & regular candy to send to the troops!

** Valentine’s Day Movie Party – The Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society will be hosting a FREE Valentine’s Day Party on Saturday, February 13th at 12 Noon. There will be cupcakes and coffee and some other goodies – and then we’ll watch a great romantic film, the classic Emmy Award winning “Queen of the Stardust Ballroom” – which filmed scenes here in Woodhaven in 1974 and aired on CBS in 1975. It was big news when they filmed scenes here! Now come and watch the movie with your friends and neighbors on Valentine’s Day! Saturday, February 13th at 12 Noon at Emanuel United Church of Christ, 91st Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard.
