** Next Town Hall – Our next Town Hall meeting is Saturday, November 15th at 12 Noon at the American Legion (89-02 91st street).
** WRBA Compiles Report on Illegal Signs – The Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association has put together a comprehensive report on how the Sanitation Department manages the illegal signs that are reported to 311 – and the results are disappointing. Click here for more information.
** Woodhaven Celebration – A great many thanks to everyone who came out to last week’s Woodhaven Dinner Dance & Celebration. Click here for pictures and video of the evening’s festivities.  It was a great evening – made extra special by the presence of all our friends and neighbors. Click here to read more about it.
** Speed Limit Being Reduced – Starting November 7th, the speed limit on all New York City streets will be 25 mph unless otherwise posted. This new speed limit will be enforced by the NYPD and with speed enforcement cameras. Click here for an FAQ released by the Department of Transportation in advance of this change.
** Fall Harvest Festival Highlights – Last week, the WRBA attended the Fall Harvest Festival, handing out free bottles of water and pens – and we met about 50 new residents who are interested in learning more about the WRBA! This was a great event, click here for fun pictures and video.
** Radio Free Woodhaven Friday – Click here Friday at 10 PM to listen to Woodhaven’s Only LIVE Radio Show.  We’ll be speaking to transit advocate Mike Scala.  Catch up on the latest news in Woodhaven – Call in to speak with the host at  (646) 378-1612.

** Upcoming Events:

** Forest Park Dog Run Halloween Costume Contest – The Annual K-9 Korral Dog Run Halloween Costume Contest for Dogs will be held on October 25th from 1 to 3 p.m. at 85th Street and Park Lane South.  Free refreshments will be served.  Judging begins at 2 p.m. and the WRBA’s Ed Wendell will be serving as one of the judges.  $5 entry fee for non-members, free for members (bring your membership cards).  Bobbing for Hot Dogs contest 2:45 p.m. Fun event to watch, click here for last year’s highlights.  For info call Charlotte: 917 337-7613.
** Birds of the Highland Park Ridgewood Reservoir – Sunday, October 26 9:00 a.m. Meet at the Reservoir entrance located across the street from the Highland Park Vermont Place parking lot. Join the Brooklyn Bird Club on a fall bird migration walk. Have fun looking for winter sparrows, waterfowl, and raptors such as hawks, falcons, and the bald eagle! Binoculars recommended. ** American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Luncheon – Come celebrate Past Commander John Lawless and Past President Loretta Phillips with the New Commander and President, Hector Johnson and Jennifer Farley. This will be held on Sunday, October 26th from 1 PM to 5 PM at the American Legion (89-02 91st street). You’ll get a Family Style Dinner (Turkey and Roast Beef, mashed Potato & Gravy and all the trimmings, beer, wine, soda, coffee and dessert! Plus, dancing with DJ Richie! $30 per person, call Jennifer (718-296-3923or Loretta (718-843-1292) to buy tickets.
** Woodhaven History Research Group – Where was the Manor Theater? How about the Parkway Theater?  The first meeting will of the newly formed Woodhaven History Research Group will take place on Tuesday, October 28th at 7 PM at The Avenue Diner (91-06 Jamaica Avenue). This group (part of the Woodhaven Historical Society) will methodically search the archives available to us to build a historical database of names, addresses and other pieces of interesting information about our community. ** Free Lecture in Woodhaven on NYC in Folk and Popular Music – On Wednesday, October 29th the Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society presents a free lecture by Robert L. Cohen entitled “Oh What a Charming City: NYC in Folk and Popular Song.”  Mr. Cohen was a guest last year and was very well received. The lecture begins at 1 PM at Emanuel United Church of Christ. Note: At 1 PM on November 12th the WCHS will host the very popular Trash or Treasure Appraiser Eddie Costello.
** Halloween at Queens Tabernacle – Pastor Bowman of Queens Tabernacle writes to say: “We are planning a night out for kids on October 31. Games, candy, prizes and fun call a safe place to bring kids on Halloween night. No scary costumes please. From 6-8 pm at Queens Tabernacle (86-03 96th Street). For information call 718-846-7575.”
** Spooktacular Fun at the Forest Park Carousel – Celebrate Halloween and Cido the Clown’s Birthday on Saturday, November 1st at the Forest Park Carousel from 1 to 5 PM. There’s a Magic Show at 1 and 3 PM, a Costume Contest at 2 PM (prizes for all participants), free birthday cake for everyone at 4 PM and DJ and Music all afternoon. Click here for more information.
** ArtShare for HeartShare – HeartShare, which runs a group home in Woodhaven, is proud to announce its sixth gallery exhibit featuring artwork created by children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism.  The Opening Reception is on November 6, from 4:30 to 7:30 PM, at New Century Artists Gallery (530 W. 25th Street, Suite 406, between 10th and 11th Avenues). ** Cemetery Cleanup – The next cleanup of the Wyckoff-Snedicker Family Cemetery is scheduled for Saturday, November 8th at 9 AM.
** Supermarket Bingo – There will be an evening of Supermarket Bingo at St. Thomas the Apostle on monday, November 10th. Click here for more information.
** Emanuel’s Fall Fair – Vendors galore, books, nick-nacks, raffles and prizes — Saturday, November 15th, all day long, Emanuel United Church of Christ, corner of 91st Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard.
** Defensive Driving Class – Completion of DMV-approved defensive driving classes can provide you with a 10% reduction on your automobile insurance.  There will be a National Safety Council Defensive Driving Class held on Saturday, November 22nd from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Emanuel United Church of Christ (91st Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard).  Reservations are required; please call 718-849-1153 and leave name and phone number.  Cost for this one-day course is $35.  Breakfast, light refreshments, snacks, coffee will be provided; you must bring your own lunch
** Senior Shows – Astoria Bank is supporting the tenth season of shows for senior citizens at Once Upon A Time Inc., 87-61 111th Street, Richmond Hill with two holiday specials to kickoff the season. The first will be Rogers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” on Wednesday, November 26, at 10 AM. The second will be a muscal version of “A Christmas Carol” on Thursday, December 11 at 10 AM. All tickets are only $5 and may be reserved by calling Mark at 718-846-9182
** Swingtime Big Band in Woodhaven – The Swingtime Big Band sound is coming to Woodhaven in a show presented by St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Academy. The show will be held on Saturday, December 6th at 3 PM at Msgr. Mulz Hall,all proceeds go to benefit the school. Click here for more info.

** DEP Launches Home Water Assistance Program – New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced the launch of a new program to provide lower income homeowners in New York City with an automatic credit to their water bills. Click here for details – please share with anyone who needs it.

** Woodhaven Bus Rapid Transit – There was a rally at City Hall in favor of Bus Rapid Transit on Woodhaven Boulevard. Click here for details.

** WRBA Dance Journal – Each year, the WRBA produces a journal for its dinner dance. The journal looks back on the past 12 months, pays tribute to our honorees, and includes many ads from businesses and sponsors — click here to take a few moments to look through this year’s WRBA Journal. And please take note of the businesses that supported our community by taking out an ad in this year’s journal. Return the favor – support these businesses – and please thank them the next time you are doing business with them.  Without their support, much of what the WRBA does would not be possible.

** ICYMI – In case you missed it, here are some links to highlights from the last Grapevine: the WRBA called on the DSNY to stop issuing unfair middle of the night tickets; Eric Ulrich unveiled a new 25K graffiti initiative; the School Sisters of Notre Dame were featured on NY1; Neir’s Tavern was chosen to kick off Queens Restaurant Month; Emanuel Church held their annual Blessing of the Pets; and Queens struggles to find a catch phrase.
