** Next Town Hall Meeting TOMORROW – SATURDAY – Our next Town hall meeting is Saturday, October 18th at 12 Noon at the American Legion (89-02 91st street). Click here for a story about last meeting, at which the latest attack in Forest Park was discussed.
** Woodhaven Celebration – A great many thanks to everyone who came out to last week’s Woodhaven Dinner Dance & Celebration. ** WRBA Dance Journal – Each year, the WRBA produces a journal for its dinner dance. The journal looks back on the past 12 months, pays tribute to our honorees, and includes many ads from businesses and sponsors — click here to take a few moments to look through this year’s WRBA Journal. ** Upcoming Events:

** Forest Park Fall Festival (sponsored by Eric Ulrich) – The Forest Park Fall Festival will be held TOMORROW – SATURDAY Saturday, October 18, from noon to 3 p.m. Click here to see last year’s event which was very well received.  The fall festival is for families and will include crafts, entertainment, pumpkin patch, face painting, games and recreational activities.Click here for the flyer for this event.   IMPORTANT: The WRBA will have a table at  the Fall Festival – make sure you stop by and say hello, you might get a surprise.
** Wonderful Woodhaven Street Fair – This year’s Street Fair, brought to you by the WBID/GWDC, will be held on Sunday, October 19, from noon to 6 p.m. on Jamaica Avenue from Woodhaven Boulevard to 80th Street. The WRBA will be out in front of the office (84-20 Jamaica Avenue) selling WDHVN-11421 T-Shirts. The Woodhaven Historical Society will also be at the same spot selling Woodhaven History books, the Woodhaven Ambulance Corps will be there giving away free blood pressure checks and representatives from the Woodhaven Senior Center and the School Sisters of Notre Dame Educational Center for Women will also be with us. Please stop by and say hello!

** Forest Park Dog Run Halloween Costume Contest – The Annual K-9 Korral Dog Run Halloween Costume Contest for Dogs will be held on October 25th from 1 to 3 p.m. at 85th Street and Park Lane South.  Free refreshments will be served.  Judging begins at 2 p.m. and the WRBA’s Ed Wendell will be serving as one of the judges.  $5 entry fee for non-members, free for members (bring your membership cards).  Bobbing for Hot Dogs contest 2:45 p.m. Fun event to watch, click here for last year’s highlights.  For info call Charlotte: 917 337-7613.
** American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Luncheon – Come celebrate Past Commander John Lawless and Past President Loretta Phillips with the New Commander and President, Hector Johnson and Jennifer Farley. This will be held on Sunday, October 26th from 1 PM to 5 PM at the American Legion (89-02 91st street). You’ll get a Family Style Dinner (Turkey and Roast Beef, mashed Potato & Gravy and all the trimmings, beer, wine, soda, coffee and dessert! Plus, dancing with DJ Richie! $30 per person, call Jennifer (718-296-3923or Loretta (718-843-1292) to buy tickets.
** Woodhaven History Research Group – The first meeting will of the newly formed Woodhaven History Research Group will take place on Tuesday, October 28th at 7 PM at The Avenue Diner (91-06 Jamaica Avenue). This group (part of the Woodhaven Historical Society) will methodically search the archives available to us to build a historical database of names, addresses and other pieces of interesting information about our community. Who knows where this research will take us? What hidden and long-forgotten tales of Woodhaven’s past will we uncover? ** Free Lecture on NYC in Folk and Popular Music – On Wednesday, October 29th the Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society presents a free lecture by Robert L. Cohen entitled “Oh What a Charming City: NYC in Folk and Popular Song.”  Mr. Cohen was a guest last year and was very well received. The lecture begins at 1 PM at Emanuel United Church of Christ. Note: At 1 PM on November 12th the WCHS will host the very popular Trash or Treasure Appraiser Eddie Costello.
** Emanuel’s Fall Fair – Vendors galore, books, nick-nacks, raffles and prizes — Saturday, November 15th, all day long, Emanuel United Church of Christ, corner of 91st Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard.
** Defensive Driving Class – Completion of DMV-approved defensive driving classes can provide you with a 10% reduction on your automobile insurance.  There will be a National Safety Council Defensive Driving Class held on Saturday, November 22nd from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Emanuel United Church of Christ (91st Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard).  Reservations are required; please call 718-849-1153 and leave name and phone number.  Cost for this one-day course is $35.  Breakfast, light refreshments, snacks, coffee will be provided; you must bring your own lunch
** Senior Shows – Astoria Bank is supporting the tenth season of shows for senior citizens at Once Upon A Time Inc., 87-61 111th Street, Richmond Hill with two holiday specials to kickoff the season. The first will be Rogers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” on Wednesday, November 26, at 10 AM. The second will be a muscal version of “A Christmas Carol” on Thursday, December 11 at 10 AM. All tickets are only $5 and may be reserved by calling Mark at 718-846-9182
** News & Announcements:
** WRBA Calls Sanitation Out On Unfair Tickets – The WRBA recently issued a call for the DSNY to stop issuing unfair tickets in the middle of the night when home and store owners are not even aware garbage has been dumped there. The story made several papers (see here and here for examples). And you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for more coverage – it would be a “shame” if you missed it!
** Eric Ulrich’s Graffiti Initiative – For the past few years, Councilman Eric Ulrich has had a program to remove graffiti from buildings – and this past week there was a press conference to bring attention to a new push of the 25K program. ** SSNDEC Featured on NY1 – The School Sisters of Notre Dame Educational Center was recently featured on NY1, click here to see it (Time Warner subscribers only). And they were also featured on the Spanish language version of NY1 (click here).
** Congratulations to Neir’s Tavern – This is Queens Restaurant Month and we’re very happy and proud that Queens Boro President Melinda Katz chose to kick it off here in Woodhaven at Neir’s Tavern & Steakhouse. Follow Neir’s on Facebook here.
** Emanuel’s Blessing of the Pets – It was a dark and stormy morning – so the annual blessing of the pets at Emanuel United Church of Christ was moved indoors – we were there and took pictures and video.
