** Our Top Stories:

** Town Hall Meeting – Our next Town Hall will be Thursday, September 18th, 7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall (89-02 91st Street – behind PS 60).  We will be joined by the 102 Precinct’s Deputy Inspector Hank Sautner and by representatives of HeartShare, the organization that is opening a new group residence on the corner of Woodhaven Boulevard and 89th Avenue. ** WRBA Graffiti Cleanup Results – This past weekend, with the help of volunteers, the Block Association reached its goal of hitting each mailbox in Woodhaven to ensure that it was graffiti-free. While the volunteers were out, the WRBA also hit fire boxes and traffic control boxes. Click here for pictures to see how much cleaner our neighborhood looks when the mailboxes are clean.
** Woodhaven Celebration – Have You Gotten Your Ticket Yet? – The WRBA’s Annual Fundraiser/Celebration is scheduled for Friday, October 10th (that’s 10/10 — easy to remember!) and will be held this year at Roma View Catering.  Click here to read about our Business of the Year, The Avenue Diner – and click here to purchase tickets.
** A Happy Ending – This past week, the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association was very happy to have played a part of a multi-community effort to bring a Woodhaven family’s pet back home to them after it had gotten lost. Click here for the full story.

** Special Announcement – We’re happy to announce that Madeline Lovallo is donating a framed, full-sized print of her Lewis’ of Woodhaven painting to be raffled off at this year’s Woodhaven Celebration/Fundraiser for the WRBA at Roma View on Friday October 10th (click here to buy a ticket: http://bit.ly/wrba2014). Madeline and the Lewis family will be on hand – we’ll bring a Sharpie in case the winner would like this autographed by the whole gang.  What a nice piece of Woodhaven memorabilia that would make!

** Other Events:

** Richmond Hill Park Fair 9/13 – The Richmond Hill Park Fair will take place on Saturday September 13th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  The location is the intersection of Park Lane South, Myrtle Avenue, and 108th Street in Richmond Hill.  The WRBA will have a table set up, selling t-Shirts, Dance Tickets, Ambulance Corps Fundraiser Tickets.  Drop by and say hi!

** Cemetery Cleanup 9/13 – The Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society along with STA’s Woodhaven History Club and All Saints will be holding their 3rd Cemetery Cleanup on Saturday September 13th from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.  Click here to see pics and video from the August Cleanup. Volunteers are welcome and needed.

** Ambulance Corps Fundraiser – The WRBA along with our elected officials — Mike Miller, Joe Addabbo, Eric Ulrich, Elizabeth Crowley and Nydia Velazquez — are holding a ’50s themed Pasta Dinner Fundraiser for the Ambulance Corps. They are in dire straits and need our help. Click here to purchase tickets and help Save The Ambulance Corps. Saturday, September 20th starting at 5 p.m. at Emanuel United Church of Christ.
** Tongue Threat Tuesday at Neirs  Are you a writer, poet, or spoken word artist? Come out and show your stuff or come eat, drink, and listen to some of Queens’s awesome poets, on Tuesday September 23rd at 7 p.m. at Neir’s Tavern (87-48 78th Street).
** Small Business Seminar – There will be a Small Business Seminar sponsored by Assemblyman Mike Miller on Wednesday, September 24th at 7:30 p.m. at Emanuel United Church of Christ (91st Ave and Woodhaven Boulevard).  Special guest: the Commissioner of the Dept. of Consumer Affairs.  ALL small business are invited to come and discuss their issues with the commissioner of DCA.  Call Assemblyman Miller’s office if you have questions: 718-805-0950.
** The Great Woodhaven Yard Sale 2014 – Back by popular demand, the WRBA will be sponsoring The Great Woodhaven Yard Sale again in 2014.  Last year more than 60 families participated with a good number reporting sales of well over $100.  As of this writing, we have 58 households. The 2014 Great Woodhaven Yard Sale will be on Saturday, September 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (rain date: Sunday, September 28, same times). Click here to register.
** Emanuel’s Pre-Fair Dinner – Emanuel United Church of Christ’s annual pre-fair dinner, Saturday, September 27th – a full meal and live music, lots of fun, $20. Dinner starts at 5:30, for more information call 718-849-1153.
** Recycling Event at Forest Park – Sponsored by Sen. Joe Addabbo and Assemblyman Mike Miller.  Forest Park Bandshell.  What can you bring for recycling? Clothing: bedding, linen, paired shoes, scarves, belts, hats and handbags (all items must be clean and dry). Electronics: Computers, monitors, cell phones, servers, fax machines, typewriters, TVs, PDAs, scanners, copiers, printers, air conditioners, etc. Paper: including paper fiber and confidential papers which will be shredded as you watch.  Carpeting: Accepting residential type carpeting and foam padding only. Household Goods: including dishes, glasses, silverware, lamps, pots and drapes. Also accepting books and eyeglasses for donation. For more info, call Sen. Addabbo’s office at 718-738-1111.
** Jamaica Avenue Trolley – There will be a trolley on Jamaica Avenue from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 4th, courtesy of the Woodhaven Business Improvement District.

** Blessing of the Pets  Emanuel United Church of Christ will hold their annual Blessing of the Pets on Saturday, October 4, starting at 11 a.m. Bring your dogs, cats, birds, turtles, etc. for a blessing at Emanuel (91st Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard). ** Forest Park Fall Festival (sponsored by Eric Ulrich) – The Forest Park Fall Festival will be held on Saturday, October 18, from noon to 3 p.m. Click here to see last year’s event which was very well received.  The fall festival is for families and will include crafts, entertainment, pumpkin patch, face painting, games and recreational activities.Click here for the flyer for this event.   IMPORTANT: Volunteers are needed to help with the kids with crafts, at the pumpkin patch and recreational areas, as well as set up and break down of the event. ** Wonderful Woodhaven Street Fair – This year’s Street Fair, brought to you by the WBID/GWDC, will be held on Sunday, October 19, from noon to 6 p.m. on Jamaica Avenue from Woodhaven Boulevard to 80th Street.

** Forest Park Dog Run Halloween Costume Contest – The Annual K-9 Korral Dog Run Halloween Costume Contest for Dogs will be held on October 25th from 1 to 3 p.m. at 85th Street and Park Lane South.  Free refreshments will be served.  Judging begins at 2 p.m. and the WRBA’s Ed Wendell will be serving as one of the judges.  $5 entry fee for non-members, free for members (bring your membership cards).  Bobbing for Hot Dogs contest 2:45 p.m. Fun event to watch, click here for last year’s highlights.  For info call Charlotte: 917 337-7613.
** Emanuel’s Fall Fair – Vendors galore, books, nick-nacks, raffles and prizes — Saturday, November 15th, all day long, Emanuel United Church of Christ, corner of 91st Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard.
** Defensive Driving Class – Completion of DMV-approved defensive driving classes can provide you with a 10% reduction on your automobile insurance.  There will be a National Safety Council Defensive Driving Class held on Saturday, November 22nd from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Emanuel United Church of Christ (91st Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard).  Reservations are required; please call 718-849-1153 and leave name and phone number.  Cost for this one-day course is $35.  Breakfast, light refreshments, snacks, coffee will be provided; you must bring your own lunch
** News & Announcements:
** Primary Election Results – The primary election was held on Tuesday. Locally, Eleanor Errante was re-elected as Democratic District Leader, and Angel Vazquez was elected for the first time as a Democratic District Leader. And State Senator James Sanders, who represents the southeast corner of Woodhaven, also won his primary. Congratulations to all!
** Raccoon Vaccinations – During September, wildlife biologists with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Cornell University will distribute oral rabies vaccine (ORV) along the southern border of Brooklyn and Queens to prevent the spread of rabies virus among raccoons. ** Large Sinkhole in Forest Park – Beware of the 19th Hole, a giant sinkhole in Forest Park that has not been addressed in two years. Click here to learn more about it.

** Fire on 88th Street – There was a fire on 88th Street on Saturday August 30th – no one was hurt. Click here to see pictures of the fire contributed by residents and published in The Forum.
