** WRBA Membership Drive – The Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association (WRBA) is kicking of its Annual Membership Drive.  To enable prospective members to learn about the organization, the WRBA will hold an “open house” this Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the WRBA’s office (84-20 Jamaica Avenue).  Anyone interested is invited to stop by. The WRBA is hosting a Thank You to Our Vets barbecue on Saturday, June 14th – you you are invited! Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Salads and, naturally on Flag Day, flags and families. We have lost so many traditions over the years – and we spend a lot of time looking at old photos and the way things were — well, here is an opportunity to experience that once again! Everyone is invited, free of charge – come out, thank our Vets, meet your neighbors — at American Legion Post 118 89-02 91st Street (behind PS 60) on June 14th at Noon. Click here for more details.

** Woodhaven Boulevard Meeting – Do you travel on Woodhaven Boulevard? If so, you are one of 26,000 who take this route every day. There will be a special meeting to discuss the potential of Select Bus Service – and an opportunity to share your opinions, thoughts, gripes and complaints about transportation on this roadway – Monday, June 16th, 7pm at Emanuel United Church of Christ. Click here for more details.

** Town Hall Meeting Saturday – Our next Town Hall will be Saturday, June 21st, 10 AM at the American Legion Hall 89-02 91st Street (near PS 60). Please take note of the early start time – start your day with a Town Hall meeting and have the rest of the day for Summer activities.
** Woodhaven’s Community Calendar – The WRBA has a community calendar chock full of local events. It can be found on our homepage, on the bottom right-hand corner — it is also on the homepage of Project Woodhaven. Have an event you’d like added? Let us know!

** 102nd Precinct Blood Drive – There will be a blood drive at the 102nd Precinct on Thursday, June 26th from 1 PM to 7 PM.  Click here for more information.

We will meet at 121st and Jamaica Avenue and it will end at Woodhaven Boulevard and Park Lane South approximately 3:30 PM.
** The Great Woodhaven Yard Sale 2014 – Back by popular demand the WRBA will be sponsoring The Great Woodhaven Yard Sale again in 2014.  Last year over 60 families participated with a good number reporting sales of well over $100 — this year we’re aiming for 100 participating households. The 2014 Great Woodhaven Yard Sale will be on Saturday, September 27, from 9AM to 4PM (rain date Sunday, September 28, same times). Click here to register.

** News & Announcements:
** Radio Free Woodhaven – The WRBA’s online radio show, LIVE Friday’s at 10 PM. This Friday (6/6) we’ll be joined by Jess Nizar of Rider’s Alliance to discuss Woodhaven Boulevard and Jeff Kurzon, a congressional candidate for our district. Click here Friday at 10 PM to listen LIVE.  You can also click the same link later on to listen to the recording.

** Planting Trees The Better Way – Noticed a lot of new trees going up?  Click here to read a column from Alexander Blenkinsopp on how the parks Department can better approach the task of planting trees.
** SSNDEC ESL Students Honored – On Tuesday, the ESL (English as a Second Language) students of Level 1 through 4 finished the semester with a closing ceremony at the School Sisters of Notre Dame Educational Center for Women. Fifty-five students received certificates of achievement and several students addressed their teachers and classmates, telling them how the courses have changed their lives. Click here for pictures and video.

** Bully Moms Host Event in Forest Park
– There was an event at the Forest Park Dog Run designed to educate people about Pit Bulls, click here for pics and video. Click here for an article in this week’s Leader-Observer.
** Vision Zero Reporting AppHere is an interesting online application used to report dangerous issues as part of Vision Zero. This does not replace 311 (it’s always good to get these reports on file) – and it’s always a good idea to let the WRBA know when you report dangerous conditions – but since Vision Zero is getting a lot of attention right now it may be advisable if residents also report our areas of concern here, as well.
** The WRBA Royals – As noted previously, the WORKS Little League T-Ball team that the WRBA sponsors found themselves without a manager – so the WRBA has stepped in. Want to come and root for our team? The next 2 games are Sunday 6/8 at 1:00 PM and Thursday 6/12 at 5:45 PM – both games at the track at Victory Field.
** Woodhaven Native Pens Play – Daniel McCabe, a native of 89th Street, has written a play that will open in NYC in August. Click here for more information. We will be speaking with Daniel in an upcoming edition of Radio Free Woodhaven.
Until next time,
Your friends and Neighbors at the

Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association
