** Our Top Stories:

** Flag Day Barbecue Thanking the Vets – The WRBA is hosting a Thank You to Our Vets barbecue on Saturday, June 14th – you you are invited! Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Salads and, naturally on Flag Day, flags and families. We have lost so many traditions over the years – and we spend a lot of time looking at old photos and the way things were — well, here is an opportunity to experience that once again! Everyone is invited, free of charge – come out, thank our Vets, meet your neighbors — at American Legion Post 118 89-02 91st Street (behind PS 60) on June 14th at Noon. Click here for more details.
** Graffiti Cleanup – We are looking for volunteers for a graffiti clean up on Saturday June 7th. We will meet at the office (84-20 Jamaica Avenue) at 9:00 AM. We are going to paint mail boxes and log down any locations that will need to be cleaned up by the city’s graffiti removal program. Please RSVP via email, or call 718-296-3735 and leave a message.

** Town Hall Meeting Saturday – Our next Town Hall will be Saturday, June 21st, 10 AM at the American Legion Hall 89-02 91st Street (near PS 60). Please take note of the early start time – start your day with a Town Hall meeting and have the rest of the day for Summer activities

** Woodhaven Boulevard Meeting – Do you travel on Woodhaven Boulevard? If so, you are one of 26,000 who take this route every day. There will be a special meeting to discuss the potential of Select Bus Service – and an opportunity to share your opinions, thoughts, gripes and complaints about transportation on this roadway – Monday, June 16th, 7pm at Emanuel United Church of Christ. Click here for more details.
** Woodhaven’s Community Calendar – The WRBA has a community calendar chock full of local events. It can be found on our homepage, on the bottom right-hand corner. It can also be found here. Have an event you’d like added? Let us know!
** WRBA Membership Drive – The Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association (WRBA) is kicking of its Annual Membership Drive.  Current members will be receiving a mailing to renew and bring in new members.  Suggested contribution will be $15/family living in the same household. Click here for more information.

** Ambulance Corps Street Fundraiser TODAY The WRHVAC has been going through a difficult time – and there is no rent coming in (due to the collapsed building which there has been very little progress on, sad to say). But they still have bills to pay.  So members of the Woodhaven Volunteer Ambulance Corps will be at Forest Parkway and Park Lane South today accepting donations from cars passing by. If you are out today, please consider driving past and making a small donation.
** Other Events:

** St. Luke’s Open House – St. Luke’s Nursery School and Pre-K program located at 87-34 85th street, will host an open house through Friday June 6th 2014, between the hours of 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Space is limited so this is a good opportunity to tour the school and pre-register for September 2014 classes. If you have any questions, please call 718-296-6683.

** Domestic Violence AwarenessQueens Tabernacle at 86-03 96th Street is hosting a free presentation on Domestic Violence given by the 102 Pct. on June 5th at 7pm.

Click here to see pictures and video from a previous Walkathon.
** GWDC Spring Dance – The Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation is holding their annual Spring Dance at 7:30 PM on Friday June 6th at the Woodhaven Manor (96-01 Jamaica Avenue).  Tickets are $65 and include all-evening buffet and libations, as well as a DJ spinning doo-wop and modern music. ** The Great Woodhaven Yard Sale 2014 – Back by popular demand the WRBA will be sponsoring The Great Woodhaven Yard Sale again in 2014.  Last year over 60 families participated with a good number reporting sales of well over $100 — this year we’re aiming for 100 participating households. The 2014 Great Woodhaven Yard Sale will be on Saturday, September 27, from 9AM to 4PM (rain date Sunday, September 28, same times). Click here to register.

** News & Announcements:

** American Legion Post 118 Memorial Day Ceremony – The American Legion’s traditional Memorial Day Observance was beautiful, as always. Click here for some really nice photos and a lovely video.

** Memorial Day Parade Highlights – Woodhaven was nicely represented in the Memorial Day Parade in Forest Hills – click here for pictures and video.

** Pop’s Restaurant – We have been told that Pop’s Restaurant is being sold, but we have also been assured that it is the business that was sold – that the new owners intend to keep it open as a restaurant.

** POLL RESULTS: Ad Wrapped J Trains – Last week, we asked you what you thought about the J Trains covered with advertisements.  The poll results are in and out of  32 votes, 53% say they like them with caveats such as “better than graffiti” or “only if it keeps the fares down” with 41% against with one saying that “graffiti was less offensive than You Tube adverts.” The remaining 6% said they had no opinion.
** Justice – In 1981, our community was rocked by the murders of 2 bar owners at the Shamrock Bar. These two men, Richard Godkin and John D’Agnese, were well loved and worked at the local Boy’s Club. The crime was unsolved for many years, but last year Bartolomeo Vernace, a member of the Gambino organized crime family, was found guilty and last week he was sentenced to was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, plus 10 years. ** The WRBA Royals – As noted previously, the WORKS Little League T-Ball team that the WRBA sponsors found themselves without a manager – so the WRBA has stepped in.
